Historical belt and pouch by Astalo Historical belt and pouch by Astalo
Better pictures from that belt and bag what i had to made for my historical costume. I don't had proper leather for the materials, so i just take one old leather belt and ladies handbag and broke them to pieces and make all kinds of more historical looking metal parts from brass & copper plates and forged steel etc.

I take some decorative ideas mainly from the different iron age/medieval belts & bag bronze castings, because it's usually too boring to copy directly some specific grave find. (Bearded guy on that belt pouch latch is just my own interpretation from the viking god Odin.)

Can I ask what exactly you based that buckle? It looks really nice and some time ago I was looking for something similar among the findings from bronze or medieval age but I didn't get anything.

I don't usually make exact copies from certain finds. Most of the time i only mix different decorative ornaments and details from historical pieces and try to make more unique designs. For example i got the idea for that spiral end belt buckle, because i have seen people using normal penannular brooches for belt buckles in some local medieval fairs and i wanted to mix that idea with the medieval/renaissance belts with those plate wrapping ends etc.

Lol.. I just try to google some pictures and there is a roman belt buckle that looked just like normal penannular brooch [link] and i also found one more modern forged belt buckle, who was not far from my own thing: [link]

Then I know dozens of people who would lynch you for calling it historical;)
I myself wouldn't call it reconstruction, more like an inspiration. It doesn't change the fact that it looks good and it's nice you also use the ornaments in other context.

"Historical" is always more versatile term for this kind of objects with multiple sources, and that's why i don't wrote there anything about reconstruction.

I have always thinked that it's quite boring to copy some old objects just exactly, because i don't think that all the craftsmen in 1000 years ago make exact copies from their colleagues works and they all had a little bit different styles and so on.
It's just funny to see for example 10-15 almost identical looking birka bags in every viking festival just like some identical Louis Vuitton trend purses in modern cities. :XD:

Well, we could discuss what is historical and what is not forever, but I guess that would have no sense. For me it's just important to base on something that actually existed to call it this way. Cheers!
